Thrillist - Supannee House of Thai - San Diego, CA

November 9, 2019 Kudat,Visit Sabah

The new setting for a culinary operation previously catered out of its owners’ home for friends and family, Supannee’s run by an SD native and his wife (who grew up in a Thai rice farming village) serving authentic-as-it-gets regional fare in a cafe lined with photos of heart-stoppingly beautiful beaches from her home, dark wood tables, and hanging bamboo lamps, all the result of the couple’s “common love of food”, more eloquently expressed in a thoughtful rap verse about creme brulee. Apps run from standards like chicken satay and shrimp rolls, to more intriguing fare like “Thai Sausage” served with sliced ginger/peanuts/cabbage, to a platter of crispy pastry puffs stuffed with sauteed chicken and shrimp and dubbed the “Pot of Gold”, also a fitting name for any resin found in Michael Phelps’ bong. Heartier house specialties include flash fried “Larb Salmon” tossed with roasted chili/ mint/ cilantro leaves, a red curry duck with cut green grapes/ pineapple dubbed “Gang Ped Yang”, and a thinly sliced marinated flank steak called “Screaming Tiger”, as opposed to screaming “Tiger!”, which is what you do before one turns you into thinly sliced flank steak.
